The Safest Seat to Sit In On a Plane is…

[The percentages in the above graphic are survival rates.]

Popular Mechanics did a study on where it was safest to sit on an airplane based on all commercial jet crashes since 1971. Contrary to expert statements that "one seat is safe as the other," the study found that it is safer to sit in the back.

The funny thing about all those expert opinions: They're not really based on hard data about actual airline accidents. A look at real-world crash stats, however, suggests that the farther back you sit, the better your odds of survival. Passengers near the tail of a plane are about 40 percent more likely to survive a crash than those in the first few rows up front.

Here are some comment :

It’s really silly to waste a lot of money for business class. Your chances to survive are the lowest

Jon Peltier - May 20, 2008 at 7:55 am
Chances to survive a flight: 99.999 something % for coach, vs. 99.999 something % for business class. And still 99.999 something % for first class. The difference comes into play only in the tiny fraction of flights that end abruptly.

I’d always been under the assumption that the “wing box”, the section of fuselage where the wings attach, is safer, because of its greater reinforcement and the proximity to the over wing exits.

Tony Rose - May 20, 2008 at 9:09 am
I’m not sure it’s worth it to have to smell the toilet for the 99.999+ % times I will survive… :)

Mark - May 20, 2008 at 12:40 pm
The back is the sceaming baby ghetto. I’ll take my chances in the middle.

If your plane crashes you’re dead, no matter where you sit.

Flavio - May 20, 2008 at 12:41 pm
To expedite things, I always ask for seats on the front, close to the front door. I might rethink that from now on.

bbbeard - May 20, 2008 at 8:48 pm
Huh. My dad (an engineer for the Air Force) always used to tell me this, that the folks in the back of the plane are most likely to survive a crash. This was back in the ’60’s and ’70’s. Did the folks who did this study not do a literature search?

Am I reading that graphic right… no matter where you sit, you have about a 50% or higher chance of surviving a plane crash in a commercial jet? What type of plane crashes are these?

Seems like you must be including non-flight crashes where planes just skid off the runway, etc. Generally, if you crash from the air, you’re not going to live… at least, anecdotally that’s what every plane crash I’ve read about/seen on the news would tell me.

David - May 21, 2008 at 6:40 pm
dude this is silly- big woop of a difference- 50% v.s. 70%

Sean - May 23, 2008 at 1:08 am
Obviously people in the back are safest.

The mountains are upfront.

Adam Fritzler - May 23, 2008 at 12:33 pm
That study is absurd! More pop-statistics. Did they even notice that most of the accidents they refer to were thirty years ago? The nature of accidents has changed drastically over those decades — the majority of those incidents would not even happen today, due to improved instrumentation and aircraft reliability. Accidents are now far more rare — and even less likely to have survivors in any particular part of the aircraft.

Nathan - May 23, 2008 at 11:34 pm
@David: some would argue that the difference between 50 and 70% is a pretty big difference :). it’s randomness versus major advantage.

Jon S. - July 18, 2008 at 10:09 am
This doesn’t include crashing on an uncharted, haunted island, in which case the survival rate for sitting in the back approaches zero.

Comedian observation - July 28, 2008 at 1:25 pm
I believe it was Billy Connolly who came up with the [rather tasteless, if proved accurate from the graphic above] that..

“I always sit in the back of the aeroplane, because let’s face it, when was the last time you heard of a plane reversing backwards into a mountain.. “

Abhijit - August 8, 2008 at 8:16 am
Knew about this.

But not too close to the wings. The wings carry all the fuel.

In the middle of the rear, nearest to the emergency exit there.

Katrineholm Review - September 13, 2008 at 12:01 am
How about increasing your survival chances by not getting on a plane AND not living anywhere near that mountain where planes turn around and crash while going backwards! ;)

David - September 20, 2008 at 9:25 pm
Sit by the door. Bail out. Glide towards the nearest snow covered mountain. Hope to hell you’re not over Arizona.

Totora*Esther says: Haha!!! Not Bad huh? Get some time to think for your seat before you get on a plane^^

Where to sit when you are in an aeroplane???

Where to sit when you are in an aeroplane???

Today, I read a news about an Iran plane accident. 36 people died! Why so few people?? This was because it was not the whole aeroplane was damaged, only the frontal part was damaged.

So! Where should we sit when we are on an earoplane? Is it the frontal part? the middle part or we can sit at the back? Well, sitting in front is obviously not a choice because the news today taught us that those who sit in front died! So, we sit in the middle? NO! What will happen to us when the plane break into half?? Those who sit in the middle will die! The aeroplane tail might caught fire and passengers will die!

In conclusion, the whole aeroplane is most probably going to explode!!!

So, in order to precious life, why don't we just stay in our cosy home and enjoy a sip of hot coffee while watching "D-Gray Man" !!!

HOME SWEET HOME, BABE!

Thinking Time-ly~~~

I haven't been writing something which is helpful and meaningful few weeks or can I also say, few months. I used to write something good when I started to have this blog, by writing "my learning" every and every day. But after May 2009, I started to be lazy and lazy, writing post not by day and day, is by week and week.......then when the time passed, I get used to writing the post according to my mood or I can say it feeling. So, I think it is time for me to change!!! gonna write something meaningful and bring benefits to others and me, myself.

Therefore, I gonna write something about the precious of time today. To tell the truth, I'm not actually writing the "something about the precious of time", I'm getting those phrases or poem from the internet. But I don't mind, as well as it brings us the meaningful messenge that help us in our daily routine. Ha! Here is those phrase and poem.....

I have two days left for my teaching things, it is a busy month for me but I do miss it somehow. I miss the teachers and the students. So I gonna bring along the camera and take pictures with them.

After I end my teaching, I need to rush with doing the Visa and body checking for my study to China ShangHai Fudan. I also need to think what to bring to China and what to prepare.

When I in China, I can't play Maplesea lor. So sad, because China there is no maplesea server at China. I miss all my friends in maple. Aiyo!! Busy Busy Busy~~~

The teaching thing makes me busy till dizzy. I needed to teach till the 14th of July 2009. It is a long time for me.....
And now, I had finally received the offer letter from the Fudan University. Yay! But the hard thing then started. I needed to make a student visa at Kuching or Kuala Lumpur. Needed to buy air ticket and asked whoever that know how to make the student visa. Needed to contact with the Shanghai Fudan for my accomodation and need to confirm whether I can managed to get the schoolarship or not.
Hope that I can buy a cheap air ticket to Kuching or KL ^^
